On February 25, 2005 Springfields Chief of Police, John Nicholson came to the 6th grade classroom to speak about tobacco use. According to our Life Skills book, Children are experimenting with tobacco at younger and younger ages. Even before students actually try a cigarette, they are developing attitudes about smoking. Society and the media contribute to the development of positive attitudes about smoking. Children see other people smoking and see actors on television and in the movies smoking. Being children, they naturally wonder what they are missing. Chief Nicholson spoke to the students about different types of tobacco products, what ingredients are in those products, smoking laws, Surgeon Generals Warnings and immediate and long-term effects of smoking. He used many visuals including a black smokers lung. After his presentation on smoking the students were interested in his tools of the trade. He showed them all his equipment on his belt including his ASP and Taser. Nick Herrig asked to be handcuffed so Chief Nicholson showed the students how to do that.
