Students Attend Ethics Conference

The students in Donna Krueger’s Business Skills class at CHS attended a Business Ethics Conference in Marshall on Wednesday, February 15. The Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Chapter from Southwest Marshall State University organized the conference.

The keynote speaker was Walter Pavlo who was part of a $6 million money laundering scandal at MCI. He discussed how he went from the good, the bad, back to the good. Pavlo told of how peer pressure and wanting to be a team player doesn’t end when you graduate.

Eventually the guilt started tearing his conscience and life apart. He basically wanted to get caught to end the ordeal. Pavlo went on to say that prison is hard; even at a minimum-security establishment. He also stated that prison is one of those gifts that keep on giving. It has affected him and his opportunities for the rest of his life.

The conference had breakout workshops dealing with the ethical result of situations. The students learned that just because it is legal doesn’t make it ethical.

After discussing the day, Krueger said that Walter Pavlo’s speech had the biggest impact on the students. When they enter the workforce, they will think about the ethical impact of their decisions that may affect their future.
