“Everyone Deserves Shoes” Campaign Successful!

85 pairs of shoes were collected at the Comfrey Community Library and mailed to the Minnesota soldiers serving in Scania Iraq for distribution to the needy children near their base. Local teachers, school and library staff, students, community members, and church organizations participated in this drive by donating both the shoes and the postage needed.

The project was conceived after library director, Michelle Kastner, received pictures and heard stories about Iraqi poverty from her son David Wolle stationed in Scania with the 125th Battalion. “The pictures were of beautiful little children that were so excited to be getting the things the soldiers were handing out, and David described the personalities of the children so well. Some were very shy and others were bouncy and bubbly despite their having next to nothing”, explained Kastner. “David feels that if these children learn that Americans are not the enemy there is hope for the future.”

The shoes were sent to:
Effects Cell
C/O Captain Clay Forbes
HHB 1 – 125Strike
CSC Scania APO AE 09331

Anyone interested in making further donations of children’s clothing or school supplies may send these materials directly to this address.

We also have a group puzzle going at all times and this is for adults and teens alike. Spend a few minutes or an hour putting together some devilishly challenging puzzles.

Finally, don’t forget to drop off your new or like new children’s shoes. These will be sent to the 125th Battalion in Iraq for distribution to Iraqi children in Scania, where the guys are stationed. Donations to help pay the cost of shipping will be accepted. Thanks for your help!

Book Fair and Coloring Contest

Comfrey Community Library’s Scholastic Book Fair was wrapped up last week after over $1,200.00 worth of books, posters, and educational materials were sold.  These sales allowed the library to select $500.00 in free books.  Teachers also benefit by being able to fill out a “Wish List” so that parents know which books could be donated to their child’s classroom.  This year books were donated on behalf of the following students:  Mason and Cassidy Gode, Natalie and Nicole Goblirsch, Hailey and Sam Pidde, Katelynne and Nicole Kratz, and Dustin and Mitch Redman.  Thanks to these parents for their generous donations.

“The book fair is the library’s primary fundraising activity,” explained Michelle Kastner, the library’s director. “We hold one in the fall and one in the spring and it allows us to stay current with our books for children.”

This year students from Preschool through 6th Grade were able to compete in a coloring contest.  The winners received a free book from the book fair.  Winners were Preschooler Alayna Moody, Kindergartner Madisin Kuehn, 1st Grader Hannah Schroepfer,  2nd Grader Austin Windschitl, 3rd Grader Nicole Goblirsch, 4th Grader Zach Kelly, 5th Grader Karli Kelly, and 6th Grader Alysia Helget. Laptime Story Hour will start on Tuesday, November 13th at 6:45 PM.  We will be meeting the 2nd Tuesday of every month, thru April.  These classes are based on a state library model that promotes early literacy.  Parents learn how to teach pre-reading and pre-math skills in a fun way.  Little ones who have not yet started school just get to have fun and play games!  These classes last for approximately 30 minutes, but if your little one can only sit for 15 or 20, that is fine too.  Dana Larson, who is our resident “little one” expert will be facilitating the meetings.

Harry Potter Fans unite!  The library will host a party on Friday November 16th at 7:00. This event is for students Grades 3 and older and adults that love the series.  Costumes are encouraged, but not required.  I will be Professor McGonagall in case you were wondering!  Activities will include a Harry Potter Scene-It competition, a sorting hat ceremony where you can take an official survey to see which of the four Hogwart’s Houses you would be placed in.  “Please not Slytherin! Please not Slytherin.”  Please sign up in the library for this event, so we can prepare.  Anyone wishing to check out my prize stash, see me later.  Over the year’s I’ve collected a lot of Harry Potter items to be awarded to only Our Cook Book Club’s next meeting will be on Monday November 19th at 6:30 PM in the library.  During the month of December the plan is to assemble an entire meal, with each person preparing one course.  More on that later.

the worthiest muggles.

The Monday, October 29th meeting of the cookbook club was fun and filling.  9 ladies attended.  Welcome to Lavoris Ericksen, Mary Ann Schumacher, and Angie Steffl.  From what I heard, having been ill with the flu and unable to attend, was that Leann Helget’s Sante Fe Casserole and Janette Pidde’s Stuffed Squash were crowd favorites, but that Sharon Lang’s Cheese and Bacon Potato Bake, Ivona’s  Winter Fruit Bowl, and Jen Johnson’s two kinds of cookies were well received as well.  If I left any of the great cooks or recipes out, I apologize.

Our Cook Book Club’s next meeting will be on Monday November 19th at 6:30 PM in the library.  Our cookbooks for November are Betty Crocker’s best Christmas Cookbook, and Favorite Brand Name Best-Loved Holiday Recipes.  This should be the perfect chance to try out some new recipes to use for the holidays.  Anyone wishing to pick out a recipe can stop into the library, and we’ll get you started.  If you just want to stop in and see what it’s all about, feel free.

Comfrey Library’s Christmas Tea will be Saturday, December 1st from 1:00 – 2:00.  Anyone wishing to decorate a holiday table with 4 place settings and a centerpiece, please contact the library.  We have 4 tables spoken for already.

During the month of December the plan is to assemble an entire meal, with each person preparing one course.  More on that later.

Anyone that has purchased the Yoplait Yogurt with the pink foil lids, please save the lids for Janette Pidde.  She is collecting these and will send them in to raise money for the Susan G. Korman, “For the Cure” fundraiser.   This is a program to promote breast cancer awareness.  She will be collecting these lids until December 20th.  You can drop them off at the library.

The next Comfrey Library Board meeting will be Wednesday, November 7th at 7:30 PM at the Comfrey Community Library.
